Information
Bar Sady is a revival typeface based on the sign above Bar Mleczny "Sady" — a milk bar that has stood in Warsaw's Żoliborz neighbourhood since the 1960s. The original lettering, designed specifically for that one sign, became part of local identity: recognised across the city for its PRL-era character and a defining quirk — horizontal strokes that extend beyond the letter bounds, giving the typeface its unmistakable silhouette.
The revival was created by Mateusz Machalski & Małgorzata Bartosik as part of the Warsaw Participatory Budget 2023. The original letters were lifted, cleaned up and extended into a full character set, with a bold style added to complete the family. The goal was to refine without erasing — improving details and proportions while keeping the vernacular spirit of the source.
